High School wraps up regular season with senior recognition
Sunday was senior recognition day for the
district, honoring 42 seniors, including
Rhinelander’s Dominic Hakala, Blake
Klingen, Jackson Fuss and Leander Sprecksel,
as the Hodags closed out the regular season
on the lanes.
VARSITY
The Rhinelander varsity team split its pair of
matches, finishing the regular season with a
5-5 overall record.
The Hodags opened the day with a 7-1-1
win over rival Lakeland Union. Rhinelander
controlled the early portion of the match,
winning the first three games by scores of
180-144, 219-100 and 136-108. Lakeland
Union claimed the fourth game 171-155,
while the fifth ended in a 161-161 tie. Rhinelander responded by winning the final four games, posting scores of 190-139, 161-138, 223-179 and 176-147.
In the second match, Rhinelander fell 6-3 to Iola-Scandinavia. The Hodags opened with a narrow 159-157 win in the first game, then picked up additional wins in the fifth and sixth games by scores of 181-172 and 181-162.
Individually, Dominic Hakala led Rhinelander with 15 strikes, 13 spares and eight opens. Jackson Fuss followed with 12 strikes, 15 spares and nine opens. Leander Sprecksel finished with 13 strikes, eight spares and 15 opens, while Blake Klingen recorded 10 strikes, 18 spares and eight opens.
Freshman Eli Miller closed the day with eight strikes, eight spares and seven opens. Brighton Walkowski added two strikes, four spares and seven opens.
JUNIOR VARSITY
It was a split decision as well for the Rhinelander / Three Lakes / Elcho / Phelps junior varsity team to wrap up its regular season.
The Hodags dropped the opening match to SPASH, 7-2, earning wins in the fourth game (164-142) and eighth game (134-115). Despite several close games, Rhinelander was unable to generate consistent momentum early.
Rhinelander rebounded in the second match with an 8-1 victory over the BYE. With a bye score of 125 to beat, the Hodags won all but the seventh game, narrowly falling 125-121.
Three Lakes junior Oren Alsager led the way with 20 strikes, 11 spares and just five opens on the day. While official results will be finalized after Wednesday, Alsager is projected to finish in the top 10 individually, qualifying for the BCAW High School State Meet scheduled for the first weekend of March.
Phelps freshman Charlie Duquaine recorded 11 strikes, 10 spares and 15 opens, while Silas Johnson added 10 strikes, 12 spares and 14 opens. Alyssa Habeck finished with seven strikes, 14 spares and 16 opens, and Oliver Doppke closed the day with seven strikes, 10 spares and 19 opens.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
The Rhinelander middle school bowling team struggled Sunday afternoon, dropping a 7-0 decision to DC Everest #1. The Hodags finished with a 37.14 fill percentage as a team.
Natalie Dellenbach led Rhinelander with five strikes, seven spares and just two opens across 14 frames. Charlotte Preuss added four strikes, three spares and seven opens.
The middle school team returns to action Sunday, March 22, at 3 p.m. at Dale’s Weston Lanes, with the final match of the season scheduled for Sunday, April 12, at 10 a.m. at Nick’s Hodag Lanes.
